Pali is the language of the oldest record of the Buddha's teaching. When he passed away, everything he said lived on in human memory alone.

For two hundred years that memory held: six generations of reciters carried the words through councils and schisms, past Alexander's armies and under Ashoka's edicts in stone, until a monk stepped onto the sands of Egypt with a memorized sutta and a birch-bark scroll.
